Friday, Jun. 21, 2002 - let's not shit on ourseves, boys.
2:35 pm
ladies and gentlemen, the revolution has begun.

correction: the revolution began a long time ago. it has merely arrived, on the fringes of pop culture consciousness.

ours is a generation that is coming of age. we are angry. for far too long we've watched as the world around us has gotten worse and worse. we're angry because we're lost. there is no place for the depressed, for the jaded, for the disillusioned, for the ones who lack direction.

we are a generation sick of suburbia and all that it stands for. we are a generation that is our parents' worst fears come true; a generation that will not stay silent.

no one thing defines us.

we are the gammas, and it's time to take charge. no more of this alpha shit, the slave to mtv, the darling of their sorority or fraternity. no more beta girls, the ones who lick the boots of those im power and end their life being defined simply by the word "wanna be".

define us, we dare you. we are a generation sick and tired of being sick and tired, and it's about damn time we take what's ours. this is our time. and it isn't about finding your niche and fitting in and having lots of money. it's not about having a house in the suburbs and 2.5 children and going to church every sunday because that's what everyone does.

it's about finding ourselves, and not being afraid to stand up for what we believe in. we are no longer a country of sheep, so easily led astray by the people in power. we can and do think for ourselves, to shout about what we believe in, whether it be politics, world problems, or something as basic as love.

and we're ready to rock out.

it's the music that defines us. nirvana began the alt-rock revolution, the beatles brought in the british invasion of the fifties, elvis ushered in the age of rock and roll.

gone is the heyday of britney and christina. even pop has it's punk princess in the form of pink.

the vines, the white stripes, jimmy eat world, saves the day on MTV; dashboard confessional on TRL; the faint touring with no doubt.

something is changing.

where once dressing in clothing from the goodwill would get you stared at on the street, the style has gone mainstream. half the guys in commercials wear geeky plastic framed glasses.

the mainstream has just run head first into the underground.

and while there are some that lament the fact that their favorite band that no one knew about a year ago is now gracing the airwaves on a constant basis, i do not. yes, there will be people who listen to the music because it's cool, who wear fake glasses to look like everyone else, and who follow like sheep, this too will pass.

i'm not sure if the above ramble made any sense at all. i'm very tired. iowa city is the shit. that is all.

If the world could remain within a frame like a painting on a wall then I think we'd see the beauty then we'd stand staring in awe at our still lives posed like a bowl of oranges, like a story told between the fault lines and the soil. ~ Bright Eyes - Bowl of Oranges

...or the story is in the soil, keep your ear to the ground.
